How To Check Your Internet Connection

If you have lost your connection to the Internet, you will not be able to access the Stanford Alumni Association web site, nor any other web site.

STEP-BY-STEP SOLUTION

  1. In your web browser, type the URL of a different web site, such as www.yahoo.com or www.ebay.com, to see if you can successfully access these pages. Also, try to bring up a site that you have not visited for some time (or have never visited) to eliminate the possibility that the pages may be cached.
  2. If you cannot access the SAA site and cannot access other web sites, you may have lost your Internet connection. If you are a PC user, there is a small tray icon in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen that displays your Internet connection. If there is a red "X" over this icon, or if you double-click on this icon and see "Disconnected" in some form in the resulting dialogue box, you have lost your Internet connection. Note that some Internet Service Providers, such as AOL, will terminate a session after a certain amount of idle time has passed.
  3. Reestablish your Internet connection in the same manner you normally use to access the Web, either by a dial-up connection, by automatic dialing software (DSL users), or by an always-on connection (Cable users). If you are unable to maintain a stable Internet connection, you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider.
